Philosophy in Children's Literature

Description:
Students read 1 picture book each week and discuss the philosophical ideas the book might raise in the mind of a child (e.g. free will, moral responsibility, personal identity, existence and being, etc.). Students learn to analyze the artistic and literary elements of picture books and write reviews of 4 works according to standards found in professional reviews of children's literature. This project connects with the course's first unit on the nature of philosophy as a method of questioning the world as well as whichever unit is being covered that week.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Description:
Students read The Road by Cormac McCarthy and discuss and analyze the literary merit of the work in multiple stages (e.g. a quiz, student-run Q&A, group discussion, presentations, in-class essay). Special focus is given to the students' analysis of the work via the literary elements (i.e. theme, setting, etc.) that appear in essay questions on the AP exam.
